According to Italian Coworking data, in 2018, there were 661 Coworking spaces (CSs) in Italy. This number raised to 1027 in 2023. CSs are concentrated in Northern Italy; however, they have especially grown in the country’s South (+81%).
Applying a mixed methods approach (quantitative and qualitative analysis), we show that Italian CSs are located and grow in large urban areas and some medium-sized cities, less in suburban areas. This growth is triggered by the potential of tasks that require remote work and the presence of knowledgeable workers with social skills.
